November has been a busy time for CAHCS. On Wednesday 5th Mark Coombes impressed us all with his wonderful slides from his photographic travels all over the world.
Friday 7th was Table Quiz night, and 17 teams assembled in An Caipín. A good humoured entertaining evening followed, with the Tarelton Macra team emerging as overall winners.
Our Annual Craft Fair took place on Sunday 16th. A fine display of local arts & crafts filled Castletown Hall. While it would have been desirable to have more members of the public to support the show, all the exhibitors gave the event their thumbs up, with each one expressing their hopes to return next year.
Sunday 31st August 2008 Heritage Week Event in Coppeen
At 6.15pm our group met at Coppeen National School. We travelled on to Ahilnane where Sean Kelleher spoke to the group on the days and events leading to the Kilmichael Ambush. The site we visited was where the Volunteers had their confessions heard the day before the ambush. It was very atmospheric with the rain threatening at every moment. It is always worth meeting at such locations as history so often records the location of ‘the big event’ but the stop off points and other way side places which are an integral part of the story are easily forgotten. Our group was helping preserve and commemorate the memory of these ‘lesser locations’. We rounded off the event with a convivial cup of tea and some lovely homemade sandwiches at Barretts of Coppeen.
