At 3:00am on 27th August 2009 Canon Liam O’Mahony passed to his eternal reward. He had been unwell in recent years and was being cared for in Millbrook Hospital Bandon.
Canon Liam was a native of Castletownkinneigh, Enniskeane. His mother was Bridget Lynch from Kilcrohane on the Sheep’s Head Peninsula, West Cork. His father was the renowned historian, author & local schoolteacher Jeremiah O’Mahony. His grandfather William O’Mahony also taught in Castletown primary school.
Liam O’Mahony was ordained in St. Patrick’s College Maynooth on 17th June 1951. He then spent some time in Edinburgh before returning to Ireland to be Chaplain in Schull Parish in March 1956. He moved to Dunmanway in 1957 and became Chaplain there for a period of four years. Then he was appointed as curate in Goleen parish in 1961. In 1963 he moved on to Kilmichael until February 1967 when he became Chaplain in Our Lady’s Hospital Cork where he remained for 10 years. In March 1976 he moved to Ovens parish as curate, where he remained for over 14 years until he was appointed curate in Bantry in October 1980. 1984 saw him being promoted to Parish Priest and moved to Newcestown (Murragh and Templemartin) which was to be his final appointment. Fr. Liam was appointed Canon of the Cathedral Chapter in 1998, being the first ever priest to be appointed Canon while in Newcestown. He retired as parish priest of Newcestown in 2004.
In retirement, he continued to live in the Parochial House in Newcestown with his long-serving housekeeper Bessie Keohane. Canon Liam was widely recognized as an expert bird breeder and he was also a great lover of animals, particularly cats, of which he had many. As a younger man he was a successful athlete. His friendly disposition, and broad minded and well informed view of life and the world made him a wonderful conversationalist. To him everybody was equal. His practical, no nonsense approach to everyday life stood him and the parishes in which he administered in good stead.
Appropriately, the undertaker at the funeral was his primary school classmate Denis O’Mahony of Enniskeane. After concelebrated Requiem Mass in St John’s Church Newcestown, Canon Liam O’Mahony was finally laid to rest in the family plot in Castletownkinneigh churchyard on Saturday 29th August 2009.
MAY HE REST IN PEACE
