Present Day Lackareigh School

For a place where there was so much activity back in the day, its hard to believe such a small building in its present state was the focal point of the locality for education, Macra and the likes. The following gallery presents a set of photos taken back in 2008 of Lackareigh School. Click here to view the gallery.

    Hello Shane,

It always makes me sad to see the old places slowly falling to pieces these days. It is a pity that a nice little school like this one can’t be refurbished and saved as a Museum, both to
remind us of the past and for tourists to visit in the future.

I went to Mawbeg National School myself, built in 1875 and long since converted to a dwelling house. There’s too much conversion and too little conservation going on these days Shane. Thank you for sharing the pictures. Charlie Mullins

      Hello Charlie,

Many thanks for your kind words. I agree, it is indeed a shame to see places like this go into such disrepair. Particularly when there is so much rich history following Lackareigh school. I have heard many second hand stories about the days of Macra events and so on that are intriguing. Also, the view from the school is amazing. Looking to the east, one could just imagine in older rural West Cork, gazing at the ever increasing red hue in the sky to the east, where the city has sprawled out. I’m hoping to do a few more of these features (perhaps an even more up-to-date one on Lackareigh school) in the near future.

      Thanks again,
      Shane C
