Gerald Butler (a third generation Lighthouse Keeper) spent much of his early life at the Galley Head lighthouse, where he was one of a family of 15. He has served as an Assistant Lightkeeper on Bull Rock, Fastnet Rock, The Old Head of Kinsale & Mizen Head lighthouses. At present, he is the Assistant Lightkeeper on The Galley Head. During his 21 years of service, he also served on Dún Laoghaire East Pier, Roche’s Point, Power Head, Wicklow Head, Tuscar Rock, Hook Point, Ballycotton Island, Skellig Michael, Inishtearagh, Eeragh, Eagle Island, Blackrock Mayo, Arranmore, Fanad Head, Rockabill, Roancarraig & The Baily, Howth.
Gerald was stationed on the Fastnet Rock in 1979 during the night of the ill-fated Fastnet Rock yacht race in which 18 people lost their lives.
Gerald has co-written a book “The Lightkeeper – a Memoir” & has featured prominently in the recent RTE series on lighthouses. Signed copies of his highly acclaimed book will be available for purchase on the night.
Gerald is a natural-born story teller & he has a wonderful collection of slides to accompany his lectures. Following on the huge success of an amazing presentation by Fr Tom Hayes in November, we really look forward to welcoming Gerald to Coppeen on Wed 5th December at 8:30 for another outstanding event.
