Hello William, good to hear from you. In order to address your query in a meaningful way, it would be great to get any more detail at all on your grandmother Margaret. Can you verify that she came from 'our' Coppeen - near Enniskeane, County Cork, as there are other places named Coppeen in other locations. The name O'Donoghue/Donoghue is fairly common in this area (pretty close to your 'Donahue') We would be delighted to try & help you trace your ancestors, but it would be most helpful if you have any other information at all, be it in relation to the place, or Margaret's siblings names (who remained in Ireland) or the likes.
Regards, Colum Cronin - Chairman CAHCS.

My grandmother Margaret A. Donahue came feom Coppeen Ireland and immigrated to Milton Massachusetts in the late 1800's . She had a sister whose name was
Ellen who immigrated before her and worked in Milton Massachusetts
saved her wages and provided money for her sister to come to Milton. Are there any
records in Coppeen of that period? I took summer study at University College Dublin
and lived at Saint Patrick's (Belvedere House) years ago. My brother married a women from the Aran Islands. I am intrested in finding where Margaret Donahue's parents areburriesd

Chris an Mary, thank you for that good news, glad to know that the monument in Mt Olivet cemetery is well maintained, which is only right and proper. Both his family grave and the monument to Ricard at Kinneigh near his place of birth, are looking very well at present.

Upon reading the foregoing by Sean O'Donabhain this morning (May 13, 2011) about Ricard O'Sullivan Burke's monument with "curved headstone and sunken into the ground, partly covered in dirt..." we drove out to the grave. We were familiar with it, having first taken the National Graves Association's Eva O Cathaoir to see and photograph it about 15 years ago. The day we visited it the ground was covered by about 2 feet of snow, but O'Donabhain's comment seemed dubious, as all of Mt. Olivet cemetery is beautifully maintained.

So today we inspected the monument. It is in pristine condition, its curvature is part
of a Louis Sullivan-type of ornamentation that includes delicately carved interlacery, no dirt or debris of any kind was in evidence and the adjacent sod is sound and evidently permanent.

We took photos of it. Its appearance is nothing like O'Donabhain's description. It is an impressive, dignified marker of Ricard Burke's final resting place. However, it seems to us that it ought to include a mention of his heroic efforts for Ireland's freedom. .

Hello Charlie,

Many thanks for your kind words. I agree, it is indeed a shame to see places like this go into such disrepair. Particularly when there is so much rich history following Lackareigh school. I have heard many second hand stories about the days of Macra events and so on that are intriguing. Also, the view from the school is amazing. Looking to the east, one could just imagine in older rural West Cork, gazing at the ever increasing red hue in the sky to the east, where the city has sprawled out. I'm hoping to do a few more of these features (perhaps an even more up-to-date one on Lackareigh school) in the near future.

Thanks again,
Shane C

Hello Shane,

It always makes me sad to see the old places slowly falling to pieces these days. It is a pity that a nice little school like this one can't be refurbished and saved as a Museum, both to
remind us of the past and for tourists to visit in the future.

I went to Mawbeg National School myself, built in 1875 and long since converted to a dwelling house. There's too much conversion and too little conservation going on these days Shane. Thank you for sharing the pictures. Charlie Mullins

Cheque on its way. If it is as good as Volume I (which we have read several times - great article on Kilmichael too) well, we're in for a great read!
