What is CAHCS?: CAHCS (Coppeen Archaeological Historical & Cultural Society), is a voluntary non-profit organisation who's aims are: 'to research, record and preserve all aspects of our archaeological, historical & cultural heritage, and to foster an appreciation of these near and far'.
What does the logo represent?: The logo represents Cahirvagliair Fort, which is located very near the village of Coppeen. Depicted in the logo is a representation of the stone entrance, with the map symbol for a ring fort surrounding it.
Where is Coppeen Located?: Coppeen (An Caipín) is located on the Bantry Line (R585), about half an hour away from Cork City. We are located half way between Beál na mBláth and Kilmichael, with Kinneigh and Cahirvagliair near by. We are situated roughly half way between the towns of Macroom, Dunmanway and Bandon. How often does the society meet?: The society usually meets once a month, on the first Wednesday, usually with a guest speaker present at these. If there is an upcoming event, an extra meeting is held beforehand to finalise preparations. All meetings are held in the meeting room at "An Caipín Bar" (Proprietors: Therese and Conor)
How many members do you have?: The society currently comprises of 28 members.
What kind of activities does your society participate in?: The gathering of information relating to all aspects of our heritage is ongoing. Discussing & recording this is central to our existence. We consult with experts when tackling particular problem issues, & liaise with County Council & Government departments on an ongoing basis. At our monthly meetings, we often have speakers in who lecture on a variety of topics, from information on local historical & archaeological sites, to plants and herbs. We have also had a number of outings to local places of interest, such as Cahirvagliair Fort and Kilcrea Abbey. During Heritage Week, we have had a number of interesting events, including a Scoríocht in Barrett's Coppeen, and a talk on the grounds of Kinneigh Round Tower. This year we also held a Craft Fair in May to promote local crafts and trades.
