Around 2am on Sunday morning November 28th, 1920, the Volunteers marched to Kilmichael from Ahilnane, north of Enniskeane, after Fr.O´Connell P.P. Enniskeane, had heard their confessions. Pat Deasy a sixteen-year-old from Kilmacsimon and John Lordan, Newcestown joined them later. They deployed them thus:

The Command Post occupied by Tom Barry with Jim (Spud) Murphy and John (Flyer) Nyhan, both from Clonakilty and Mick O´Herlihy from Union Hall.
No.1 section – consisted of 10 men, north of the road.
No.2 section – Michael McCarthy from Dunmanway led 10 more, were situated behind the monument.
No.3 section – Stephen O´Neill was in charge of 12 men, who were divided in to 2 groups of 6, at either side of the road. Two unarmed scouts were posted at the northern side of the ambush and another on the Dunmanway side.

    • Hello John,

Some time ago our society acquired a historic map which we copied, restored & placed on display in An Caipín bar Coppeen. It sounds like this map will provide you with all the information you need. If you trawl through our ‘events’ list on our website you can see a posting referring to that particular event. Alternatively, use the following link to get straight to that page: http://www.coppeenheritage.com/2008/03/01/kilmichael-ambush-map-unveiling. Beside the map you will see some photographs (of mine) which should also be of assistance. This map was drawn by a Fleming man, an engineer with the auxies who came from Macroom to accurately record the event immediately after the ambush. Locations of vehicles & bodies are noted. You can get more info on this if you check out the aforementioned web page.

Enjoy your visit, & let me know if I can be of any further assistance in any way.

      Regards, Colum
