The tragic death of Patrick (Paddy) Hickey of Laravoulta, 100 years ago.

One hundred years ago, on 24th May 2021, Paddy Hickey from Laravoulta, Enniskeane was shot dead by a British Auxiliary while cutting turf in a bog near his home. Following is a transcription of his death notice from the Cork Examiner, Thursday 26th May 1921:

 HICKEY – On 24th May at Laravoulta, Enniskeane, Patrick Hickey. Age 44 years Accidentally shot. Deeply regretted by his wife and family and a large circle of friends. R.I.P. Funeral from residence on this day Thursday at 2 o’clock (old time) for Kenneigh Graveyard.

 The Hickey family Laravoulta originally came from Farranthomas (D.J. Collins farm) And a Farranthomas Hickey family grave exists in Kinneigh. Paddy Hickey was buried here in 1921. (Ref. K15.4)

Paddy was married to Mary (nee Lordan) Mary died on 8th March 1980 and she is buried in Kinneigh. Following is the inscription from her gravestone:

In loving memory of Mary Hickey Laravoolta Enniskeane who died 8th March 1980 aged 93 years. R.I.P. (Ref. M16.8)

Mary was left with four young children and another on the way. Her fifth child was born about a month after Paddy’s death. Mary was a great survivor. She rearerd her family and managed her farm in an admirable fashion. Her neighbours were generous with their assistance in helping her to get by.

Tim (Timothy) Hickey (Mary & Paddy’s son) who died in 2013 is buried in this same grave (M16.8) Following is his death notice from the Examiner:

Hickey Laravoulta, Newcestown: on Feb 18th 2013, in the loving care of nurses & staff of CareChoice Nursing Home Macroom, TIMOTHY (TIM) HICKEY. Sadly missed by his loving nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, brother-in-law, cousins, neighbours, relatives & friends. Requem Mass on today (Thurs) at 2:30pm in St John's Church, Newcestown.  Funeral afterwards to Kenneigh Cemetery.  May he rest in peace.

At this time, let us be mindful of Paddy Hickey and say a prayer for the happy repose of his soul. Also, spare a thought for his wife Mary and her family, who must have suffered grievously as a result of this heinous crime.
